The Better Business Bureau, known most commonly as the BBB, enacted a rating system in 2009 and 2010 that they use to grade companies. On November 12, 2010, ABC News exposed a tendency by the BBB to reward members with better ratings, a pattern long observed by many businesses across the country. ABC News characterizes the sham as a “pay-for-play scheme.” As many who have been on the negative side of a BBB complaint and choose not to pay the BBB can attest, what the Better Business Bureau is doing is closer to extortion, as clearly shown in an ABC News report.
As stated on the BBB website, “Ratings are determined by a proprietary formula that represents BBB’s opinion as to (1) the importance of each category, and (2) the appropriate score given to the business for each category.”
BBB assigns grades from A to F with pluses and minuses. A+ is the highest grade and F is the lowest. The grade represents BBB’s opinion about the business based on complaints filed with the BBB, regardless of whether the complaint came from an actual customer and apparently regardless of complaint resolution or percentage of complaints to total customers.
